GREAT SCIENCE WRITERS

  • Bora Zivkovic: One of the kings of science on the web. Follow!
  • Boundary Vision: Blogged by Canadian professor Marie-Claire Shanahan, her insights examine where science meets society, education and policy.
  • Conservation Magazine: The Journal Watch feed is a good one for enviro research updates.
  • Deep Sea News: One of many great marine blogs out there written by real researchers. Quick to post on current events.

  • io9.com: Gawker Media has been blasted for their exasperating corporate culture, but this blog has demmed  interesting content for scifi and science news. Plus the editor is a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow.
  • Not Exactly Rocket Science: Ed Yong is probably the most prolific and subject-diverse science blogger on the scene today. He needs a TV show.
  • Per Square Mile: Written and illustrated with an exquisite touch by Berkeley PhD and former AAAS Media Fellow Tim De Chant, this is a must-read blog about urban planning.
  • ScienceNOW: Solid research blogging from the online editors of Science.
  • Science Quest: My mentor Gary Robbins, now with the San Diego Union-Tribune, continues to break new ground on hyperlocal science journalism.
  • Southern Fried Science: A fun-loving, opinionated gaggle of marine biologists who banter on science and society.
  • Tetrapod Zoology: A fantastic source for fun, scholarly analysis from the world of paleontology and zoology. Maybe the first blog I’ve ever followed.
  • That Car Blog: A must-read on green transportation, written by a real grease monkey/clean energy expert.
  • Write -30-: Journalist Tyler Dukes offers keen insights on science and the media, plus hyperlocal reporting.
SCIENCE OUTREACH RESOURCES

  • COMPASS: Dedicated to training sea scientists into better communicators, this group does impressive work.
  • Fishbase.org: Not a blog, but a must-have resource for fish geeks.
  • SciStarter: Founded by science outreach leader Darlene Cavalier, this is a great resource for classroom/backyard projects.
  • Science Cheerleader: Also founded by Cavalier. A fantastic idea for bringing science to the public.

MEDIA AND THE FUTURE

  • Kevin Sablan: A good soul to follow for social and web media frontiers.
  • Sonya Smith: Like Sablan, Smith is another OC Register media sage worth following.
